If you are interested in playing games, reading stories, making crafts, or serving/making lunches for young children, this is the volunteer opportunity for you! Kids love to see familiar faces, so sign up for one day or sign up for them all. |
Act activities, games, books, food, and more – what else could a child ask for? Kids’ Café completed its 7th summer of offering these things and more for children looking for something fun to do and make new friends.
During June, children age four through those entering 5th grade participated in eight sessions of Kids’ Cafe at Delaware and Mitchellville Elementary schools. Similar to previous years, the program included a nutritious hot lunch, and students received a shelf-stable bag of snack items to take home after each session. Children participated in literacy activities that revolved around a book theme, and then were provided with their very own copy of the book to take home at the end of the day.
Curriculum for the literacy activities was developed by elementary teacher Amy Skarin, Mitchellville resident; and Ruth Johnson, Runnells resident and retired elementary Runnells Elementary teacher.
For the 2nd year, older youth living in Mitchellville were able to participate in Reach Out Mitchellville, designed especially for that community’s students entering 6th to 9th grade. Youth enjoyed leadership activities and community service projects for their town. Juliann Scearcy, Mitchellville volunteer, and Mark Petersen, Iowa State University Extension, led the youth in the activities.
Next summer, we plan to continue Kids’ Café (at both Delaware and Mitchellville Elementary schools) as well as Reach Out Mitchellville. Kids’ Café was funded by a grant from Polk County Community Betterment, Caring Hands Outreach, and local churches and individual donors. Reach Out Mitchellville also received funding from a Department of Education Team Nutrition grant and Iowa State University Extension.
