On August 10, 2011, Central Place, with the help of community volunteers and donors, including premier supporter Cargill, Inc., sponsored a one-day school supply giveaway for any student entering a Southeast Polk school. Again this year, each pre-packed backpack included nearly all the items on a student’s list, which made distribution day go more smoothly for families and our volunteers. We enjoyed helping 591 students get a fresh start to the first day of school.
For the first time in our 16 years of carrying out this program, we required pre-registration to receive assistance with school supplies. We made this change to ensure we would have enough for the families who arrived on distribution day, and to allow us to better plan for support from our volunteers who helped with pre-packing of backpacks.
