Season of Sharing is a holiday giving program that matches children from the Southeast Polk district who qualify for the free/reduced lunch program who would not otherwise have a bright holiday.
Children are matched with donors, who provided gifts for the children and/or food for the family. Eligible adults without children receive holiday food boxes. Each person served is entered into a confidential, countywide data base to ensure that families are only served by one organization.
After families sign up, they provide gift suggestions for the children in the household, and a small (optional) gift suggestion for the adults.
The wish list is then given to the donor, who purchases items for the family, usually spending about $65 per person. Gifts typically include toys, clothing, stocking stuffers, games, and gift certificates.
Some donors prefer to give monetary donations and have Central Place staff and volunteers do the shopping. Donors either deliver the gifts directly to the families, or bring the gifts to Central Place for distribution.
Volunteers assist by processing the gifts that arrive at Central Place and group them together to be picked up by the family.
The volume of items that arrive at Central Place during this time is huge, and sorting and processing could not be carried out without the support of volunteers.
