In May, June and July, families with a child entering a Southeast Polk school, who meet income guidelines, sign their children up to receive a new pair of tennis shoes for the beginning of the school year. Each child is matched with a donor.
Donors can either purchase shoes for a child or give a monetary donation that Central Place staff uses to purchase shoes through Shoe Carnival and Payless Shoes.
One of the best aspects of New Shoes for You was our collaboration with Payless Shoes. Families who signed up for the program will go to Payless with vouchers sent from Central Place to use as verification/payment for shoes at the store. Families will be checked in at the front of the store as they are given a pair of socks for their child to keep and use to try on shoes. They will have their choice of any athletic shoe in the store including a large amount of over stock ordered specifically for the event.
We offer the Payless option to all students and also give the choice to junior high and high school students if they would like to be matched with a direct sponsorship donor. Donors who choose direct sponsorship will be sent an information card for a designated student with their shoe size, color and style peferences listed.
If a lower amount of donors choose direct sponorship the monetary donations received for New Shoes For You! will be used by Central Place staff to purchase shoes for students at Shoe Carnival or Payless Shoes.
New Shoes for You relies on the help of volunteers who assist staff in distributing shoes and socks, ensuring proper fit of shoes and assisting with check- in and check-out of shoes. If you are interested in volunteering for this program please call Elaine Collet at 266-6795.
